Description
Ireland, Hiberno-Norse. Sihtric III Olafsson. Ca. 995-1036. AR penny (19 mm, 1.50 g, 3 h). Phase I coinage, long cross type. Dublin, ca. 1000-1010. Faeremin, moneyer. + SIHTRC RE+ E DYFLN, Draped bust left; behind, large pellet surrounded by four smaller pellets / + F·Æ-MEM NNΘ DYFL, voided long cross with triple crescent ends. O''Sullivan type 3; Dolley, "The Dublin pennies in the Name of Sihtric Silkbeard in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad," in The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland for the Year 1963, pl. 1, 2 (same dies) ; SCBC 6103. Scarce variety with five pellets behind bust. Flan a little wavy. Slightly double struck on reverse. Good very fine.
