Description

CONSTANTINE I. 307-337 AD. Æ Follis (19mm - 2.96 g). Ticinum mint. Struck 326 AD. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, laureate head right / PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG, camp-gate with no doors and two turrets, star above; QcrescentT. RIC VII -; LRBC -. VF, green patina with some earthen highlights. Overstruck with traces of CAES visible on the obverse above CONSTAN.

From the Zachary "Beast" Beasley Collection of Camp Gates.

This is the usual reverse legend for the camp-gate series from all mints except Ticinum which was unique in it's use of the D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG legend. This is unrecorded in RIC with this reverse legend. Possibly an ancient imitation but to this cataloger the style is consistent with other issues from Ticinum, from the style of the portrait to the small dots in the top row of bricks.
