Description
ANTIQUITIES, Maya "Poison Bottle" from Guatamala. An exceptional Maya “poison bottle” from Guatemala, ca. 400 – 800 AD. Popularly known as poison bottles, because some are found to contain cinnabar (highly toxic mercury sulfide), many were in fact used to store snuff. This traditional molded bottle is 2-1/4” high and is decorated with two depictions of a shaman holding a staff, perhaps intended to be a planting stick. Highly burnished, good mineral deposits and trails. Cf. Kidder, ""The Art of the Ancient Maya", page 97.
