Central Europe, Boii. 2nd-1st centuries B.C. AR obol (9 mm, 0.75 g). Smooth hump / Stylized warrior standing left, holding large shield. Paulsen -; cf. Kostial 54-6 for obv., 41-2 for rev. (both gold 1/3 staters). Unpublished. Darkly toned. Extremely fine.
The Boii struck gold fractions coping the types of Alexander the Great's gold stater, and both the size and types quickly diverged from the original. This coin is not published in the standard reference by Paulsen (R. Paulsen, Die Münzprägungen der Boier, Vienna, 1974) but seems to perhaps show the closest affinity to the stylized gold third staters cited to Kostial in the description above. However, it is a purely silver fraction, and it appears that there is nothing else similar that has so far been published.
