Pisidia, Antiochia. Valerian I. A.D. 253-260. Æ (21 mm, 5.12 g, 1 h). Blundered legend: IMP CAERASLLOVNΛHIΛC, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Volusian right / ANTIO-CHIOC, S R in exergue, vexillum surmountd by legionary eagle left between two standards. Krzyzanowska dies -/-; SNG BN 1294-6 corr. (citation to K. incorrect; same obv. die; catalogued under Volusian). Brown patina with light deposits. Very fine.
Although the obverse die is fairly common, Krzyzanowska does not record it for any emperor. Based on the late style and reverse type as well as the letters LLOV in the obverse legend, the emperor is usually attributed to Volusian. However, it could equally apply to Valerian I. Since the reverse shows the eagle facing left as opposed to right, which only occurs on coins certainly attributable to Valerian I and Gallienus, we catalogue the coin here as a coin of Valerian. SNG BN incorrectly cites Krzyzanowska dies V/14 for the three specimens that they have that are struck this same obverse die.
