Description

Sicily, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 B.C. AR tetradrachm (24 mm, 17.17 g, 5 h). Ca. 425-420 B.C. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying left, crowning charioteer with wreath / ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-Ο[Ν], head of Arethusa right, hair bound in sphendone; around, four dolphins. Cf. Boehringer 705 (V345/R483); cf. SNG ANS 237 (same dies). Obverse roughness and dark find patina. Very fine.

The reverse die was slightly reengraved to widen the upper band of the sphendone on Arethusa's head in ancient times, but Boehringer apparently had not observed this as he did not record an example. The reverse die thus is R483'. Of the three additional specimens we could find photographs of, all were of the original die.
