Syria, Commagene. Zeugma. Lucius Verus. A.D. 161-169. Æ (17 mm, 8.61 g, 1 h). [ΑΥΤ] ΚAIC M A ΑΥΡ[Η?] ΟΥΗ[ΡΟΝ], radiate head of Lucius Verus right / ΖЄΥΓΜΑ/ΤЄωΝ in two lines; below, Γ; all within wreath. Butcher 25b; Paris 1552 (same dies). Black patina with light earthen deposits, a few cleaning marks. Very fine.
Butcher notes that the portraits of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus are generally but not always depicted on Zeugma's coinage with either a short beard or long beard respectively. The legends for both are, on occasion, mixed, as is the case here. Butcher cites just one specimen with radiate head of Verus right, a coin in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale, inv. no. 1551. Because part of this massive and extremely important collection has now been published online, we were able to confirm that our coin is struck from the same dies (see http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8497115h.r=zeugma%20verus).
