Description
2nd century B.C. Heavy Æ unit (20 mm, 13.39 g). Siva standing facing, with Nandi bull to left and tree-in-railing to right / 4-orbed Ujjain symbol. Pieper -. Very rare. Brown patina, surface roughness. Fine.
Lord Mahakal (Shiva) is the local deity worshipped in Ujjain. Finding Shiva and Nandi bull together on a coin is difficult. Also, heavy coins featuring Shiva are very rare. This 13 g specimen is one of the heaviest we've ever seen. It is over 5 mm thick!
