Description

Agacha Republic (Punjab-Haryana region). 1st century B.C. Æ (13 mm, 1.56 g). Lion standing right / Tree-in-railing with Brahmi legend, (Agro)dake Agacha (janapadasa). Cf. MIG VII, 973. A very rare and choice specimen, with the tribal name Agacha clearly visible. Brown patina. Fine.

The coins of Agacha (or Agrodaka) janapada are very rare. This was a post-Mauryan tribal republic in the Punjab-Haryana region. They were the precursors of the Agrawal clan, a prominent mercantile caste of northern India.

A similar specimen sold for $350 in an Indian auction in 2014.
