Description
Kochhiputra Sri Satakarni. 1st century B.C. Æ (25 mm, 10.67 g). Bold countermark of swastika symbol / Undertype of 4-orbed 'Ujjain' symbol, with Brahmi legend (Siri Sa)takanisa above. Not listed in the standard references. Rare and choice. Olive-green patina. Very fine.
The Satavahana Empire controlled the Deccan and central India for over three centuries after the fall of the Mauryas. The coins inscribed in the name Sri Satakanisa were probably issued by two succeeding kings who laid the Empire's foundations.Â
This is a heavy coin of the early Satavahanas with a bold swastika countermark, which indicates revalidation by a later ruler.
