Description
Brihaspati Naga. 3rd century A.D. Æ 1/4 kakini (8 mm, 0.99 g). Seated bull facing right / Brahmi legend (Maharaja) Brihaspati (Naga) written clockwise. Dark green patina. Fine.
The Nagas ruled central India from their capital Padmavati, with twelve kings issuing small dumpy copper coins. The dynasty came to an end when the last ruler Ganapati Naga was subjugated by Samudra Gupta in the 4th century A.D. and the Naga kingdom was annexed to the growing Gupta empire.Â
Coins of Brihaspati Naga are rare. This specimen has the king's name clearly visible on the reverse.
