Description

Ramagupta. Ca. A.D. 375. Æ (7 mm, 0.17 g). Garuda seated facing with wings outstretched / Brahmi legend Ramagu(pta). A pleasing specimen with a clear legend. Scarce. Brown patina. Fine / very fine.

Ramagupta was the son of Samudragupta and elder brother of Chandragupta II. His stronghold was Malwa in the western part of the empire. The copper coins found there are the only coins known to be issued in his name.

Ramagupta eventually lost out in the leadership struggle with his brother after the death of their father and was killed by Chandragupta II. These small copper coins are the only numismatic proof of a contest between two brothers in the 4th century.
