Description
Chandragupta II. Ca. A.D. 375-414. PB square unit (15 mm, 4.05 g). Garuda standing facing with wings outstretched / Brahmi legend Sri Vikrama. AICR 886. Rare and choice. Reddish yellow-brown patina. Very fine.
Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) began issuing lead coins after he conquered Gujarat, following the existing coinage of the Western Kshatrapas whom he defeated. Chandragupta II's lead coins are much rarer than those of his successors Kumaragupta and Skandagupta.Â
The lead coins of the Gupta emperors are difficult to find in good condition. This heavy specimen has Chandragupta II's royal name Vikrama clearly visible.
