Description

13th century. AR 1/2 tara (7 mm, 0.15 g). Stylized lion (sardula) standing right; lingam with crescent above / Nagari letter Ha, along with Kannada numerals 2+1/4 for the denomination. MNI -; MSI 415 (Vijayanagar); Ganesh 8.38. An attractive specimen of this small denomination. Rare. Toned. Very fine.

The Hoysala Empire was a prominent empire that ruled most of modern-day Karnataka between the 10th and 14th centuries. Ganesh assigns this coin to the Hoysalas, while Mitchiner attributes it to Vijayanagar's Hari Hara II.
