Description

Domitian. A.D. 81-96. Æ sestertius (34 mm, 24.99 g, 6 h). Germania Capta type. Rome, A.D. 86. IMP CA[ES D]OMIT AVG GERM COS XII [CENS PER] P P, laureate bust of Domitian right, wearing aegis / GERMANIA CAPTA, S C in exergue, trophy; to left, female captive seated left on shield, resting hand on head in attitude of mourning; to right, male captive standing right, looking back, hands bound behind him; helmet and shield at his feet. RIC 463; BMC 372; BN 395. Neat reverse type although unfortunately quite worn. Brown and olive-green patina, porous. Fine / fair.

From the Charles Darrah Collection of Flavian and Antonine Bronzes.

An interesting type that clearly imitates the extensive Judaea Capta issues of Domitian's father and elder brother, Vespasian and Titus.
