Description
Maximianus. First reign, A.D. 286-305. AR argenteus (16 mm, 3.30 g, 12 h). Treveri, ca. 298/9. MAXIMI-ANVS P AVG, laureate head of Maximianus right / VIRTVS MILITVM, the four tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure with six turrets; in exergue, club left. RIC -; RSC -. Unpublished with this obverse legend. Deeply toned with a couple of old scrapes underneath the toning on reverse. Very fine.
The legend on this, MAXIMI-ANVS P AVG, is only found on gold coins, not silver or bronze. The form is known for Diocletian for argentii, so is expected for Maximianus as well, but it was unknown to both Bruun (RIC) and King (RSC).
