Description

Memorial Red-Figure Choes. Attica, 440-420 BC. A miniature Oinochoai with trefoil mouth and squat body decorated with a naked young boy crawling. Commissioned by parents to be placed in the tomb of chidren who died before reaching the age of three and being able to celebrate “The Choes“ spring festival of Dionysos. The chous was volume of 3.2 liters and a prize was given to the first to consume this much wine. Starting at the age of three, young boys could participate using miniature vessels. 2.5” tall. Some oxidation to paint. Intact and very rare.
