Description

Bone Chess Piece - Queen. England, XIII-XIV Century. Bone cylinder which originally held an inserted head. Decorated with incised ring and dot motifs. Similar to Museum of London specimen (Med.Hous.956) except it is lacking the “mahout” wedge which designates their piece as a King -- presumably this piece is a Queen. 1.5” tall. Stable scratch to side, else intact (minus inserted head). Very rare -- possibly the first recorded Queen of this design. An extremely rare opportunity for the Chess enthusiast.
