Description

Constantius II. A.D. 337-361. Æ centenionalis (23 mm, 5.19 g, 4 h). Thessalonica, A.D. 348-350. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II right / FEL TEMP REPARATIO, emperor, holding phoenix on globe and labarum, standing left on galley steered by Victory seated at stern; TSΔ*. RIC -; LRBC -. Apparently unpublished. Sandy green-brown patina, underlying silvering. Good very fine.

This type exists for the second group, first series (A.D. 348-350, RIC 107-113) for both Constantius II and Constans with this bust type and mint mark TES[A], and also with the bust shown holding a globe. No coins of this common (pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed) bust variety with mint mark TS[A]* (cf. RIC 112 and 113) appear to be published, however. The following second series (A behind bust) does not employ this mint mark, having secondary controls in the fields, as well as it shows the emperor on the reverse holding Victory instead of a phoenix on globe.
