Description

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR tetradrachm (28 mm, 16.96 g, 2 h). Uncertain mint in Greece(?), posthumously, probably under Antigonos II Gonatas, ca. 280-260 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΧΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, N or AI or AP monogram. Price -; Hersh -. Apparently unrecorded and very rare. Choice extremely fine.

The engraving style of this coin suggests that it comes from an uncertain mint in Greece as it is similar to certain dies used there (cf. Price 796-881). The full legend with ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ and it's placement on this coin is not common for Alexandrine tetradrachms struck in Greece, but it is known. The other possibility for mint attribution is to an uncertain mint in southern Asia Minor, cf. Price 3064-84, but stylistically it is quite different from those issues.
