Description
Anonymous. 157-156 B.C. Æ triens (23 mm, 11.46 g, 7 h). Rome. Helmted head of Minerva right; above. four pellets / ROMA in exergue, prow of galley right; before, four pellets. Cf. Crawford 197-198B/3; cf. Sydenham 143b; BMCRR -. Extremely rare and possibly unique. Brown patina. Fine.
A duplicate from the RBW Collection of Roman Republican Coins. Purchased privately from Sternberg, 15 April 1997.
Crawford 197-198B/3 has the legend ROMA above the prow and the denomination mark in the exergue. Our coin has ROMA in the exergue and the denomination mark to the right of the prow. RBW noted on his coin envelope that this coin is official. It seems that no other examples of this variety are known.
