Description

Apulia, Salapia. Ca. 225-210 B.C. Æ (21 mm, 6.40 g, 3 h). Plotios, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right, quiver at shoulder / Boar charging right; above, branch; in exergue, magistrate's name: ΠΛΩΤΙΟΥ. SNG ANS -; HN Italy -. Unpublished! Brown patina, reverse lightly double struck. Very fine.

HN Italy note the reverse type but with a wreath instead of branch combined with the laureate head o Zeus on the obverse (HN Italy 691). The type with Apollo is normally combined with a horse reverse (HN Italy 692). Thus, it looks like the present coin is an unrecorded mule. The name in the exergue appears to be the magistrate's name responsible for the issue.
