Description

Calabria, Taras. Ca. 380-325 B.C. AR diobol (14 mm, 1.15 g, 9 h). Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with Skylla; before neck, A; on neckguard of helmet, [Φ] / TA-[PANTINΩN], Herakles standing facing, reaching right and strangling the Nemean lion; to left, club; between legs, |-. Vlasto 1245-6 (same dies); cf. SNG ANS 1361-2; HN Italy 914. Nice cabinet tone, flan flaw in field. Good very fine.

Vlasto notes the Greek letter Φ on the neckguard, and indeed it may be present; it is difficult to tell from the low quality images in the Vlasto reprint. If it existed on this coin, then that area of the die is so worn as to be indistinct.
