Herakleia was famous as the site of the first battle between the Romans and Pyrrhos during the Pyrrhic War (280-275 B.C.) and saw the total defeat of the Roma consul P. Valerius Lavaenus in 280 B.C. This coinage was struck in the aftermath of this victory, at a time when the Herakleiots were allied with Taras and the Lucanians against Rome.
