Description
Lucania, Metapontion. Ca. 325-275 B.C. AR diobol (13 mm, 0.94 g, 2 h). Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet / META, grain ear with leaf to right; above leaf, cornucopiae. Johnston F21; HN Italy -. Deeply toned, minor porosity. Very fine.
Featuring types copied from the Corinthian types favored by Greek mercenaries from the western Greek mainland - especially Akarnania and Epeiros - this coinage was struck by Metapontion to support the mercenary armies brought by Alexander the Molossian and Pyrrhos during their great Italian adventures.
