Description

Bruttium, Lokris. Ca. 300-268 B.C. Æ (16 mm, 4.51 g, 10 h). Head of beardless Herakles left, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΛOKP below, pegasos flying left; to right above, A; below, harpa right. SNG ANS 580; HN Italy 2416. Dark green patina with reddish earthen encrustations. Surfaces a little rough, but otherwise good very fine.

The Pyrrhic War (280-275 B.C.) overtook much of Italy when this coinage was struck. During this period Lokris seesawed between allegiance to the Romans and to Pyrrhos, but when the Epeirote king finally left Italy he rewarded the Lokrians by plundering their famous temple of Persephone - an act of sacrilege that shocked the Greek world.
