Description

Bruttium, Lokris. Ca. 300-268 B.C. Æ (19 mm, 7.67 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Zeus right, hair gathered behind under wreath / Eagle with wings closed standing left on rock. SNG ANS 536-9; HN Italy 2352. Green patina, a little rough. Nearly very fine.

The Pyrrhic War (280-275 B.C.) overtook much of Italy when this coinage was struck. During this period Lokris seesawed between allegiance to the Romans and to Pyrrhos, but when the Epeirote king finally left Italy he rewarded the Lokrians by plundering their famous temple of Persephone - an act of sacrilege that shocked the Greek world.
