Description

Bruttium, Petelia. Late 3rd century B.C. Æ (13 mm, 2.08 g, 9 h). Head of Artemis right, bow and quiver at shoulder / ΠETH-ΛINΩN, hound running right. Caltabiano p. 14, 6; SNG ANS -; HN Italy 2458. Rare. Green patina. Nearly very fine.

Little is known of the history of Petelia, although it is famous for being the only city of Buttium to remain loyal to the Romans during the Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.), about the time when this coinage was struck. The cost of this loyalty was the capture of the city by Hannibal and the expulsion of the inhabitants. They were subsequently restored by the Romans once Hannibal was defeated.
