Description

Bruttium, Petelia. Late 3rd century B.C. Æ uncia (12 mm, 1.75 g, 1 h). Bearded head of Ares right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet / ΠETH-ΛINΩN, Nike standing facing, head left, holding wreath and palm; in inner left field next to Nike, trophy. Caltabiano p. 12, 6; cf. SNG ANS 619; HN Italy 2466. Scarce. Green patina, minor porosity. Very fine.

Little is known of the history of Petelia, although it is famous for being the only city of Buttium to remain loyal to the Romans during the Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.), about the time when this coinage was struck. The cost of this loyalty was the capture of the city by Hannibal and the expulsion of the inhabitants. They were subsequently restored by the Romans once Hannibal was defeated.
