Description

Bruttium, Terina. Ca. 350-275 B.C. Æ (17 mm, 4.08 g, 1 h). Head of nymph left / [TEPI] below, crab with inverted crescent between claws. Holloway & Jenkins 121; SNG ANS 889; HN Italy 2646. Dark green and brown patina. Nearly very fine.

In the mid-fourth century B.C., Terina suffered frequent attacks by the Italic Bruttians. For this reason Terina supported both Alexander the Molossian and Pyrrhos when they campaigned in Italy in 333 and 280-275 B.C. This coinage was struck in the period between the rise of the Bruttians and the end of the Pyrrhic War and directly relates to expenses of this troubled period for the city.
