Description

Sicily, Akragas. 213-210 B.C. Æ (22 mm, 7.15 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Zeus right / AKPA[ΓA]NTINΩN, eagle standing facing on thunderbolt, head right, wings displayed. BAR issue 20; CNS 145. Brown patina, minor roughness. Very fine.

This coinage was struck by Akragas during its occupation by Hannibal's Carthaginians during the Second Punic War. It served to fund the Carthaginian garrison, but came to an end in 210 B.C., when a disgruntled Numidian mercenary commander betrayed the city to the Romans.
