Description
Sicily, Leontinoi. Ca. 450-440 B.C. AR litra (11 mm, 0.66 g, 12 h). Diademed head of nymph(?) right / ΛΕ-ΟΝ, barley grain. Boehringer 43; SNG ANS 263; Rizzo pl. XXIII, 11. Lightly toned, porosity, tiny chip on edge. Good very fine.
Struck during the period of Leontinoi as a Syracusan dependency. When this coinage was in production the population of the city underwent major change as Hieron I of Syracuse compelled Leontinoi to open its gates and accept the remnant populations of destroyed Katane and Naxos.
