Description
Macedonia, Eion. Ca. 460-400 B.C. AR diobol (12 mm, 0.91 g). Goose standing right, head left; above, lizard / Quadripartite incuse square. SNG ANS 276-91. Perfectly centered and lightly toned. Good very fine.
Eion was an important supply base for Xerxes I during the Persian invasion of Greece, but afterwards became a port for the Athenians who used it to supply their important settlement at Amphipolis in 437/6 B.C. The goose coinage was struck during the Athenian struggle to conquer and settle Ennea Hodoi which was refounded as Amphipolis.
