Description

PROBUS. 276-282 AD. Antoninianus (22mm - 3.13 g). Lugdunum mint. 8th emission, late 281 AD. IMP C PROBVS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right / PIET-AS AVG, Pietas, standing left, sacrificing over lighted altar; III. RIC V 96; Bastien 359. Near EF, nearly fully silvered.

Bastien doesn't make any distinctions in the reverse of this issue, but there appear to be two different varieties. One variety shows a veiled figure, probably representing Probus, sacrificing, while the other shows a non-veiled figure sacrificing, as on this coin and Bastien 359b. The veiled figure appears to be the more common of the two, with Bastien only illustrating one without the veil.
