Description

15th-17th centuries. Æ (15 mm, 3.23 g). Warrior running right, with traces of legend? around / Prominent dagger, flanked by sacred symbols. Unpublished. Extremely rare and unrecorded. Green patina. Very fine.

The Sambuvaryar chieftains ruled the Tonda Mandalam region of south India in the late medieval period. The dagger was their prominent symbol seen on their coinage. This type with warrior on obverse is seemingly unecorded. The warrior is seen on rare Vijayanagar coins, so finding it on a Sambuvaryar coin indicates a clear continuation of the numismatic tradition.
