Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle. 1627-1680. Æ shivarai paisa (21 mm, 11.66 g). Devanagari legend Sri/ Raja/ Siva / Devanagari legend Chhatra/ pati. Maheshwari & Wiggins T1. An attractive specimen with complete legends and full dotted borders. Brown patina. Very fine.
Shivaji was the legendary warrior king who founded the Maratha kingdom in the 17th century. He defeated the Mughals and local Muslim dynasties to carve out an independent Hindu kingdom in central India. His martial exploits and administrative reforms continue to inspire Indians today.
