Description
Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, A.D. 287-293. Æ antoninianus (21 mm, 3.87 g, 6 h). 'C' mint (Camulodunum?). IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Carausius right / PROVID AVGGG, Providentia standing facing, head left, holding rudder and cornucopiae; S-P//C. RIC 363. Porous dark brown surfaces. Very fine.
The reverse legend AVGGG references the legitimate emperors, Diocletian and Maximianus, in a wishful attempt by Carausius to ingratiate himself with them.
