Description

ANTIQUITIES, A fine Chimu figural bottle from Peru, ca. 1100 - 1450 AD. This nicely molded blackware example is 8-1/2" high and portrays the Spondylus Deity. The lentoid chamber is executed in the shape of a stylized Spondylus shell, with the spout forming the ornately attired head of the deity. The depiction of the head also shows stylistic influence of the earlier Sican (Lambayeque) culture. A nice cross-cultural example in overall in excellent condition, with good mineral deposits. Cf. M. C. Domingo, Arqueologia Andina Peru, page 231, for a nearly identical example for Madrid's Museo de America.
