The first is a Byzantine type, c. 5th - 6th Century AD, mold made, ovoid shape with sharp carination, pellets in the disc around the fill-hole and flattened nozzle decorated with a raised cross. The vertical handle with four deep grooves, four vertical ridges at read, raised ring around base containing a circular row of circles containing central pellet, another at center. L: 4 ¼” (10.8 cm). Traces of red slip; the second is another Byzantine type, c. 6th - 7th Century AD, mold made, ovoid shape with sharp carination, rim around shoulder and wick-hole, shoulder decorated with a stylized wrath composed of raised lines, crosses near the handles and another raised cross on the spout. At back stump handle and ridge base enclosing stylized geometric maker’s mark. L: 4” (10.2 cm); the third is a Byzantine type, c. 7th Century AD, mold made, round body with sharp carination of the two halves, the rim is raised around the fill-hole and decorated with pellets and lines, a ridge surrounding the entire shoulder and wick-hole. At back a stump handle, on bottom a raised star motive within a concave base. L: 3 1/8” (7.9 cm); the last lamp is an Islamic type, c. 10th - 11th Century, wheel made, with round body and tall rimmed fill-hole, conical spout with rounded tip, raised disk base on bottom. L: 3 ½” (8.9 cm). All are intact, one of the Byzantine lamps with some age cracks, Islamic lamp with minor chip on rim of fill-hole. All with light deposits and all but one showing soot from use in antiquity.Ex Orange County private collection. Value Range $300 - $350.
