Denomination above and mintmark below. Lettering: VEINTE CENTAVOS· BOGOTA ·Translation: Twenty Centavos Bogota. Reverse: LAZARETO within a rounded cross. Issuer name above the cross and the date below. Lettering: REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA. Leper Colonies·1901·Translation: Republic of Colombia Leper Colonies 1901. Mint: Bogota. Special coinage for use in the three government leper colonies ("Lazaretos" in Spanish) of Agua de Dios, Cano de Lord, and Contratacion.The hospitals were closed in the late 1950s and patients were allowed to exchange these special coins for regular currency at any bank. Minted in Bogota. KM L4. Certainly, a very unusual coin and interesting piece of history. NGC # 2820754-005.
