Description

SASANIAN KINGS, Queen Buran. 631-632 AD. Æ unit (1.99 gm; 27 mm). obverse, Buran’s bust turning right, name in front of the face, reverse, fire altar with attendants, year one to the left, mint not legible, known as western style design. The nature of large Æ drachms in the last years of Sasanian era is still subject of debate and research. Either these Æ drachms were minted for limited circulation given lack of silver at the time or were issued as fouree for silver covered coins. Dark reddish patina. Lightly creased. Choice VF. Of highest rarity among the Sasanian Æs, only 4 to 5 are known to exist.
